MEET OUR COUNSELORS

FirstLight Ministries clinical director Shari Montague.

Sharí Montague

Sharí Montague is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Missouri and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) from IITAP. . She has been on staff with FirstLight since 2019, first serving as the Women’s Ministries Director where she oversaw, taught, and cared for women struggling with the impacts of sexual issues on their lives. In 2021 she launched FirstLight’s Clinical Services as Clinical Director and continues in that role today. Sharí has a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Dordt University (previously Dordt College) and a Master’s in Counseling degree from Covenant Theological Seminary. She is passionate about understanding God’s design for sex and sexuality, teaching others, and coming alongside men, women, and couples as they work to live this out.

Matthew Friesen

Matthew, a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor, holds degrees from Missouri Baptist University and Covenant Theological Seminary. With a background in management and vocational ministry, he brings diverse expertise to his counseling practice. Grounded in compassion and biblical principles, Matthew guides clients through challenges with empathy and dedication. His aim is to facilitate healing and growth, fostering resilience and wholeness for individuals and couples. Committed to his St. Louis community, Matthew nurtures his family while accompanying clients on their transformative journeys.

FirstLight counseling services include individual counseling for men and women struggling with unwanted sexual behaviors, men or women struggling with the grief of a loved one’s sexual issues, and couples recovering from the impact of unwanted sexual behaviors and betrayal on their marriage.

Individual counseling may include:

  • Assessments (Sexual Dependency Inventory—Revised 4.0; Sexual Digital Media Inventory; Post Traumatic Stress Index—Revised; and/or Inventory for Partner Attachment, Stress, & Trauma-Revised 2.0)

  • Evaluation and Treatment Plan

  • Weekly or bi-weekly appointments

For couples dealing with the impact of unwanted sexual behaviors:

  • An initial evaluation and recommendations—75-minute session

  • Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly sessions—50-minute or 75-minute sessions

  • Guidance through a Structured Full Disclosure Process

Structured Full Disclosure Counseling

 

A stand-alone service for couples who have individual therapeutic care elsewhere but are looking for a therapist to guide this process.

  • Support and guidance writing the Full Disclosure Letter

  • Disclosure Session (a polygraph test may be used if desired—further fees apply)—Usually 2–3 hours

  • Sharing Emotional Impact Letter

  • Sharing Emotional Amends Letter

  • Sharing Forgiveness Letter, if desired

  • Interfacing with individual therapists to facilitate the disclosure process
